Cookie policy.
How Cognoir uses cookies, local storage, and similar client-side storage mechanisms. This page describes what runs by default and what only runs after you opt in via the consent banner. We try to keep both sets small.

What we use storage for
Cognoir uses a small number of cookies and browser storage entries to (a) keep you signed in, (b) remember your interface preferences, and (c) — only with your explicit consent — measure how the product is used in aggregate so we can improve it. We do not set advertising cookies. We do not embed third-party trackers on marketing pages.
Strictly necessary (always on)
These cookies are required for the application to function. They cannot be disabled without breaking sign-in, the trial flow, or session security. There is no consent toggle for these because they do not perform any function beyond what is needed to deliver the service.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| cognoir_refresh | HTTP-only cookie | Session refresh token. Held in an httpOnly, secure, SameSite=Lax cookie. Used to obtain short-lived access tokens for authenticated API calls. | 7 days from last use. |
| cognoir.trial_session | HTTP-only cookie | Anonymous trial session token, set when a visitor uses the no-signup trial. Lets Cognoir associate the one trial document and three trial questions to a stable identifier without requiring an account. | 14 days; the trial data is auto-purged at the same point. |
| cognoir.cookieConsent | localStorage | Records your choice on the consent banner so we don't show it on every page load. | 12 months. |
| cognoir.theme | localStorage | Remembers your Light / Dark / System theme preference. | Until cleared. |
| cognoir.sidebar.collapsed | localStorage | Remembers whether you collapsed the sidebar so the app opens in the same state next time. | Until cleared. |
Analytics (opt-in)
We use a third-party product-analytics tool. It is loaded only after you press “Accept” on the cookie banner. If you decline or have never opened the banner, no analytics scripts run and no events are sent. We track event names and counts only — we never log document text, filenames, chat messages, or query content.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| ph_* | Cookies + localStorage (product analytics) | Distinguishes one anonymous visitor from another so we can attribute a chain of events (e.g. landed on /, clicked Try free, signed up) to a single session. No personal information; no cross-site tracking. | 12 months. |
You can change your consent decision at any time. Open the settings menu in the app and select Privacy → Analytics to revoke or grant consent. Revoking deletes the analytics cookies on next page load.
What we never do
We do not set advertising or remarketing cookies. We do not embed Facebook Pixel, Google Ads, or LinkedIn Insight tags on this site. We do not sell or share any visitor data with third parties for advertising purposes. We do not run cross-site fingerprinting.
Browser controls
You can clear or block cookies in your browser’s settings. Doing so will sign you out of Cognoir and reset your interface preferences, but is otherwise non-destructive — your documents and knowledge bases live on the server, not in cookies.
